Many of us have also lost freedom of movement. As we sit isolated at home and consider our fears and hopes for the future, this project is a challenge to confront ourselves by creating a self-portrait. A new artist will be featured weekly. About the curator: Benjamin Mefford. Wilsonville, Oregon, USA. Image: February 28, 2020. I took this self-portrait for a master class I had been invited to teach. They needed a head shot for the brochures and I realized that after 12 years as a practicing artist I still managed to have barely any pictures of myself. It was a challenge. It looks like a simple image, and technically speaking, it is, but when you don’t feel good you don’t look good. I was feeling particularly off that day, but the image was needed immediately. I had to put myself in a mental state that reflected not how I felt, but how I wanted to feel. Somehow, it worked. I captured a moment of happiness in my eyes amid a sea of self conscious anxiety. The magic of it was that afterward I felt great. That small moment of happiness grew, until it displaced my fear and anxiety. As it turned out, the reason I had been feeling particularly bad that day was due to my health. The next day I woke up very sick with a respiratory infection, and barely got out of bed for 4 days. There is no way of knowing yet whether it was truly the new coronavirus because testing was not available. 4 weeks later, and I’ve gone from self-imposed isolation to government mandated isolation. I have also become unemployed and lost several important planned exhibitions in a matter of days. As working artists know, it takes months (and in some cases years) of planning and investment to prepare for an exhibition. As friends have pointed out, one can, and must, look at this challenging situation as an opportunity for creative problem solving. So I created this project to give myself and others affected by this illness (whether directly or indirectly) a venue to represent themselves, and to feel a little more connected to the world outside. I don’t know what will happen with this project. April 10, 2020. Doesburg, Netherlands. Facing Change 3 (series of 4) Monotype from my face, with ink made from earth / soil from the Shaxi area in China printed on Chinese rice paper. I'm normally specialized in printing flora, fauna and food. But I decided to give it a try to print myself. These corona times make me face the temporariness of everything including myself. I love making monotypes because of the intense way I touch the object. So far I left my self out of my work and I'm happy I became part of it thanks to this call for self-portraits. I mostly work with natural pigments or dyes I sometimes make myself. For my own portrait I used Chinese soil for 2 reasons. First, the whole corona thing pointed to China and I have no idea if that is fair. Why do we always like to blame some one else. Besides that I have a minuscule part Chinese ancestors in the Asian part of my background. Soil and earth refers for me to stories about the creation of humans. In my world I am living amid the flowers. I can climb on flowerbuds and enjoy the smell of fresh petals. I can hide from my fears in leaves. I am an art teacher in Cambridge, MA, and have been learning furiously to do distant teaching for the last 6 weeks. Fortunately, I am able to go to my studio when I’m not working with technology, zooming with colleagues and students, or searching for interesting projects kids can do at home. My work has been definitely different these weeks, reflecting this disquieting, introspective time. I usually don’t do self-portraits. But, this situation has been calling me to do so. “Interior with Self” started out as an interior to reflect the unsettling quietness I am feeling being inside all the time. The elements are disjointed and creating a sense as if I am falling through a time tunnel. I decided to add myself, desperately trying to stay calm, surrounded by my favorite furniture and colors of my living room. Yet, I am still tied to the world outside, whether via crazy news media or school emails, through the internet on my lap. Interior in this case is not just the interior of a house, but my emotional interior. She holds ‘corona’ beer in one hand, reflecting the virus name, and a lemon in the other hand, and of course, the doll wears a "protective mask" to soothe herself from the infection. I know disappointment and what it is like to have a full 2 years ripped from my soul in a blink of an eye. I understand what it is like to be isolated, poor, missing friends, and family. This self portrait challenges this idea, in order to create art out of a canvas that I often perceive as ugly, my body. Painting over this photograph digitally allowed me to add colors and create shapes that emphasized my body's natural curves and textures, which changed the original perception of the base image. There is also an element of natural versus artificial. Although the base image is untouched, by painting over it I am introducing artificial elements with just a few clicks on my computer. Initially, this work, as part of my environmental project, shows the suffering of the world's oceans from waste pollution; this suffering cannot be expressed better than by waterfalls of tears. But suddenly it embodied other meanings. Here are some of them: * a woman as a hero of our time, who has endured thousands of sufferings, but despite the difficulties, continues her path as a mother, wife, daughter, sister... * a symbol of what is happening right now around us: the Cup is filled with grief, sadness, fears and anxieties, but it is still not full, which means that the end of all this ugliness is close. When I found the picture I started a few weeks ago, due to the current Corona crisis, I suddenly had a completely different approach to the motif and finished it within a short time. The picture shows my impressions, feelings and thoughts under the impression of the crisis in the time of the shutdown: isolation, immobility, insecurity and confusion. The figure (self) is caught in a space that appears to be transparent, but is confusing with its numerous reflections. Actually only intended as a transit, it looks as if the door does not open as usual, the posture expresses an uncertain wait. The picture is dominated by a cool blue, a blue dark cross seems to block the passage and nobody is there to explain the situation and to provide information about the future.
